All of these definitions are archaic and this source is heavily biased. The term was coined by Pierre Leroux in 1834 to describe the opposite of individualism. Social policies benefit a group and individual policies benefit the individual. It was later co-opted by Karl Marx in his manifest and associated with the government owning the means of production. Then the USSR used the term to make communism more palatable. During the cold war communism and socialism became interchangeable, but socialism was originally and is still in most modern uses considered to be the policy of prioritizing the interest of the group. This merriam webster dictionary only presets the co-opted cold war era definition and misattributes the association with the means of production ownership to the original definition. This political bias is also seen below in how the word is used, only in a nagative way, showing the bias of the authors.
